The Shanghai Composite index in China ended 0.7% lower at 2,907 on Thursday, after the province at the epicenter of the virus outbreak reported a surge in new confirmed cases and a jump in fatalities under a new method for diagnosing cases. The number of new cases in Hubei soared to 14,840 on Thursday from 2,015 the prior day; while the death toll rose to 242 on Wednesday, the fastest rise in the daily count since December.
