Exports from China unexpectedly soared 9.7% year-on-year in January 2020, after a 7.9% growth in the previous month. This was the second straight month of increase in overseas sales on the back of strengthening global demand and an ease in trade tensions with the US following the signing of Phase One trade deal. Imports to China fell 1.5% from a year earlier in January 2020, after an upwardly revised 16.5% rise in the previous month. China’s trade surplus widened to US$39.16 billion in January 2020 from US$38.41 billion in the same month a year earlier.
