There are plenty of anomalies in Indonesian politics that political scientists may find it difficult to formulate theoretical explanations. Prabowo Subianto, who lost to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the 2019 presidential election, became the President’s minister. Prabowo’s Gerindra, the largest opposition party in the country, became a member of the ruling coalition. And now we learn that former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama a.k.a Ahok are friends with former Military (TNI) Commander General (ret) Gatot Nurmantyo. Gatot is strongly affiliated with hardline Muslim groups, those who organized the anti-Ahok rallies and put the former governor in jail.
