Japan posted a trade surplus of JPY 590 billion in June 2019 compared with a JPY 728 billion surplus in the same month a year earlier and market expectations of a JPY 420 billion surplus. Exports declined for a seventh straight month while imports fell for the second month.

Imports to Japan declined 6.7% year-on-year to JPY 6.00 trillion in June 2019, following a 1.5% drop in the previous month. Exports from Japan fell 6.7% from a year earlier to JPY 6.58 trillion in June 2019, after a 7.8% fall in May. It was the seventh straight month of declines in shipments, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute.
