Indonesian government initiated the development of a Gas and Steam Power Plant Jawa-1, in Cilamaya, Karawang, West Java province on Wednesday (Dec 19). The project will have 1,760 MW capacity by utilising 400 million cubic feet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) daily. It is expected to be the largest integrated power plant in Southeast Asia, as it combines LNG and independent power producer.

The US$1.8 billion Jawa-1 power plant involves more than 20 local and foreign companies. The project is expected to have a broad effect on economic development in Karawang and its surroundings like Bekasi and elsewhere. It will employ 5,000 workers during the construction stage and 200 people will be involved in the running of the operation.
