Geothermal Sarulla, Ltd, a consortium of five companies, announced the commercial operation of the third unit of Sarulla geothermal power plant in North Sumatra, adding another 110 megawatts to the facility’s installed capacity. The power generated from the third unit is scheduled to be sold to PLN for a period of 30 years.
This commercial operation will contribute to the existing installed capacity of the geothermal power plant in Indonesia that reached 1,808 Megawatt. This installed capacity is extremely low compared to the total 29,000 Megawatt geothermal potential in Indonesia. The utilization of geothermal Indonesia is only equivalent to the Philippines that only have the geothermal potential of 6,000 MW. Indonesia is ranked 2nd in the world in the use of geothermal, after the United States.
