2016 Retrospective: A View Towards 2019

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has only been in office for a little over two years, and yet he’s faced endless row of maneuvering from his political backers and opposition. This year, in particular, has been a very eventful year for the President. He’s had to face the threat of treason, and he’s also been forced to evaluate his position in Indonesia’s Islamic political circuit. Challenges aside, the President should be grateful. The many crises he’s overseen should’ve helped him form a better picture of the stakeholders; who’s with him, who’s against him, and their motivations. This is important particularly with regards to the general election in 2019.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday (Dec 6) expressed his optimism for better economic and investment outlook for 2017 and 2018 in the Economic Forum held in Jakarta. The President said that the economy would grow by over 5.1% on the back of improving commodities prices, higher oil price, strong people purchasing power, along with controlled inflation, and effective implementation of the economic policy packages.

More SBY Ministers on KPK’s Radar

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recently confirmed the information that they will dig in more information for Djamaluddien Malik’s case on the allegation concerning the transfer of Rp400 million to Muhaimin Iskandar when the latter was still Minister of Manpower & Transmigration under Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The allegation is nothing new and it’s not the first graft case that put Muhaimin under the KPK’s scrutiny. Moreover, Muhaimin is not the only SBY Minister that the KPK has targeted.

An anti-corruption activist Febri Diansyah has been sworn in as the new Spokesperson of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The KPK finally has an official spokesperson, a position that has been vacant for the past two years. Prior to Febri’s appointment, said position was occupied by Johan Budi Sapto Prabowo, who is now the Spokesperson of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

On Ahok’s Blasphemy Case

The incumbent Governor of Jakarta Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama was named a suspect of blasphemy on November 16, 2016. A week later, the police finalized the docket of the case and transferred the documents to the North Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office. Within less than a week, the Prosecutor’s Office stated that the docket was complete and could thus be escalated to the stage of prosecution. The case was then registered at the North Jakarta District Court under case No. 1537/Pid.B/2016/PN JKT.UTR. The district court has appointed the Panel of Judges and set the date for the first hearing, but the police hesitates to determine the location of the trial.

Bumigas Energi v. Geo Dipa Energi: The Battle Continues

The dispute between a private energy company PT Bumigas Energi and the state-owned energy company PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero) that has been going on for more than a decade continues. The dispute started as a dispute in civil law, but it later evolved into a criminal case after the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri) named Geo Dipa’s former Managing Director Samsudin Warsa as a fraud suspect in late 2014. Almost two years later, the docket on the criminal case was escalated to the stage of prosecution and registered at the South Jakarta District Court.

Participating interest in the Offshore North West Java (ONWJ) oil and gas block is one of the largest assets of Energi Mega Persada (ENRG), a company owned by Bakrie Family.
