Jakarta’s 2017 gubernatorial race has not yet started, but observers and analysts are already debating the possibility of the election running for two rounds. Shifts in political party alliances have shown a new trend towards a bigger pool of candidate pairs competing in the race. With a bigger pool of candidates, votes will get divided, making it difficult for a pair to win the election—for Jakarta, the pair of gubernatorial candidates must earn 50 percent plus 1 vote in order to be declared the winner of the election.
