President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo surprised many by choosing to nominate Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, the head of the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT), to serve as the next Chief of the National Police (POLRI). Many had expected the President to renominate the current Chief of POLRI General Badrodin Haiti to avoid the fuss of dealing with politics at the House of Representatives. But the President seemed to have decided that he’s ready for a round of nomination politics. Tito has a great career and track record even though he’s still of a young age (51). He’s less controversial compared to some of the names mentioned as likely chief of POLRI candidates. He has a good relationship with the ruling party PDI-P, and on top of that, he’s known as the President’s man. Tito’s nomination may also satisfy those eager to see a regeneration of leadership in the Police corps. Civil society groups would also be happy that they won’t have to see the controversial Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as the next chief of POLRI. Tito’s nomination makes many parties happy. This is Jokowi’s way.To subscribe please click here
