At New Year’s Eve, when most of Jakarta was in a celebratory mode, the residents of Kampung Sawah, Ciputat, a district in the Province of Banten, had to put aside their fireworks and contend with hours of pops and bangs of an entirely different sort. The Indonesian National Police’s counter terrorism unit known as Detachment 88 (or Densus 88) killed six suspected terrorists in a gun battle that lasted from late night to dawn. It’s a keen reminder that there are still Indonesian terror cells at large, planning their next move.
